Just a 50-km drive from Cairo on the Alexandria desert road will bring you to the Coptic retreat center called Anafora. Meaning "offering" in Arabic, it is a respite away from the chaos from the 20 million people of the Egyptian capital. Highlights include the quiet, the freshwater swimming pool used to irrigate the crops, and the wonderful food. Each evening at 8pm is Evening Vespers, a meaningful opportunity to hear Coptic chanting and melodies.
